Among those who manufactured reed organs in the US was Jacob Estey,
who bought out a Brattleboro, Vermont manufacturing business in 1846.
The Estey Organ Company was a prolific maker of high-quality American
organs. They built around 500,000 reed organs, the last one
manufactured in the mid-1950s.
If you know the serial number of your Estey organ it is possible to
roughly determine when it was manufactured by consulting a
table of dates and corresponding serial numbers.
An excellent resource for learning more about Estey reed organs is the book,
Estey Reed Organs on Parade, by Robert B.
Whiting. Included are a history of the company, copies of Estey catalogs, the
Organ Method explaining the organ, and other fascinating stuff.
